Trump Administration Launches ‘Operation Economic Outcast,’ Vowing Economic D-Day Against Iran

by Emmitt Barry, Worthy News Washington D.C. Bureau Chief

(Worthy News) – The Trump administration on Monday launched what Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent called an unprecedented global economic offensive against Iran, unveiling a sweeping sanctions campaign designed to sever Tehran from the international financial system and choke off revenue flowing to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and the Iranian regime.

The new campaign, dubbed “Operation Economic Outcast,” marks the opening phase of what President Donald Trump has described as an “economic D-Day” against Iran. Bessent said Washington intends to target not only Iranian entities but also foreign governments, banks, companies, shipping networks and intermediaries that continue enabling Tehran.

“Today, at President Trump’s direction, the United States Treasury has begun Operation Economic Outcast — an unprecedented campaign against the Islamic Republic of Iran and its enablers,” Bessent said. Comparing the initiative to the Allied D-Day campaign during World War II, he said the administration was launching “an economic onslaught against Iran’s financial connections around the globe.”

“Our objective is to sever every economic lifeline that sustains this tyrannical regime until Tehran stands alone,” he said.

More Than 60 Targets Hit in Opening Wave

Treasury said the initial phase includes sanctions against more than 60 entities, individuals and vessels around the world accused of helping Iran procure nuclear and missile technology, conduct cyber operations and generate oil revenue.

The administration is also establishing expanded sanctions authorities across five sectors that Tehran has used to maintain access to global commerce: digital assets, technology, gold, aviation and shipping. Treasury said the measures will substantially increase the risk of secondary sanctions for foreign companies that continue doing business with Iran.

Bessent said Treasury has mapped the networks Iran uses to smuggle oil, move money through exchange houses and free-trade zones, register aircraft and ships overseas, and conduct transactions through foreign banks.

“Any entity that facilitates money laundering on behalf of Iran will be removed from the U.S. dollar system,” Bessent warned. “The clock is ticking.”

Foreign governments are being given defined periods to shut down Iran-linked activity identified by Washington. Bessent said Treasury, the State Department and the U.S. military are already engaging governments around the world, with further penalties expected as those deadlines expire.

He specifically warned that Chinese entities would not be exempt.

“No one is above the reach of U.S. sanctions,” Bessent said, adding that Washington already knows which companies and governments are facilitating Tehran’s financial networks.

Bessent also said a major financial institution could be sanctioned before the end of the week as the campaign accelerates.

Economic Pressure Backed by Military Threat

The financial offensive is unfolding alongside continued U.S. military pressure on Tehran.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Monday that the administration has not ruled out additional military strikes around Iran or the Strait of Hormuz.

“By no means are we foreclosing using kinetic strikes anywhere in the Strait of Hormuz or around Iran,” Hegseth told reporters.

The combination underscores Washington’s broader strategy: use American military power to contain Iran while employing the dominance of the U.S. dollar and global financial system to isolate the regime economically.

Bessent framed Tehran’s choice starkly: remain on a path toward “complete global isolation and a subsistence economy,” or change course and seek a return to the international economy.

For the Trump administration, Operation Economic Outcast represents a sharp escalation from traditional sanctions enforcement. Instead of merely targeting Iran, Washington is now warning the countries, banks and businesses that sustain Tehran that continued cooperation may carry the same economic consequences.

“The campaign we begin today will gather force with every day that follows,” Bessent said. “And it will not end until this regime stands alone.”
