WASHINGTON (Worthy News) – Five people were injured, one critically, in a shooting involving multiple gunmen at Virginia State University early Saturday, authorities said, a day after six people, including a suspected shooter, died in separate shootings in Michigan.
Officers responded at about 1:28 a.m. local time to reports of gunfire near the Quad Annexes, a residential area on the Virginia State University (VSU) campus, where they found five people suffering from gunshot wounds outside residence halls.
All five were taken to hospitals, with one listed in critical condition while the other four suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening, university officials said.
Investigators said they believed more than one shooter was involved, but no arrests had been announced by Saturday afternoon.
“We don’t have anybody in custody,” Lieutenant James R. Lamb of the Chesterfield County Police Department said. “We know there was more than one shooter, so I would say the suspects are still at large.”
MULTIPLE SHOOTERS SOUGHT
Lamb said investigators were reviewing surveillance footage for evidence and were not treating any of the five wounded people as suspects.
At least one of the victims is a Virginia State University student, while another is under 18, according to police.
A temporary lockdown imposed following the shooting was lifted around 9 a.m., although authorities said a significant law enforcement presence remained on campus.
Chesterfield County Police were leading the investigation with assistance from university police and other law enforcement agencies, including federal authorities.
The shooting came as students were returning to campus ahead of the fall semester, with residence halls opening Friday and classes scheduled to begin Monday.
STUDENTS RETURNING TO CAMPUS
Virginia State University, located in Ettrick just over 20 miles (32 kilometers) south of Richmond, Virginia’s capital, has roughly 5,000 students.
It is one of America’s historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), institutions established when racial discrimination and segregation prevented many African Americans from attending other colleges and universities.
The violence came a day after a series of shootings in rural Missaukee County in northern Michigan left five victims and the suspected gunman dead and another person critically wounded.
Michigan State Police identified the suspected shooter as 39-year-old Chad Hickman after an extensive search involving several crime scenes.
Police responding Friday to a home in Missaukee County, about 170 miles (270 kilometers) northwest of Detroit, initially found three people dead and another critically wounded.
SIX DEAD IN MICHIGAN
As authorities searched for Hickman, another victim was found dead at a separate location before police located the suspect’s vehicle near Whitlock Lake.
Police later found Hickman dead in a wooded area along with another deceased person, bringing the death toll, including the suspected gunman, to six.
Authorities were investigating the circumstances surrounding the killings and had not publicly established a motive.
The Virginia and Michigan violence followed another deadly shooting earlier this month in Prospect Hill, a rural community in North Carolina’s Caswell County.
Authorities initially described the August 5 violence as a “mass shooting,” but the county sheriff later characterized it as a domestic family incident.
NORTH CAROLINA FAMILY SHOOTING
Four adult members of the same family were shot at a home in the Prospect Hill community, authorities said.
Three people died, including the suspected shooter, while a fourth person was hospitalized with a gunshot wound.
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation assisted the Caswell County Sheriff’s Office with the investigation.
Authorities said at the time that the violence was contained to the home and there was no continuing threat to the wider community.
The latest shootings added to continuing concerns about gun violence in the United States as investigators sought those responsible for Saturday’s shooting at Virginia State University.
INVESTIGATION CONTINUES
Authorities urged anyone with information about the Virginia State University shooting to contact investigators as police continued reviewing evidence and surveillance footage.
No motive for the campus shooting had been announced by Saturday.
