TORONTO/WASHINGTON (Worthy News) – Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has warned that U.S. President Donald J. Trump is “seriously” planning to annex Canada, according to records seen by Worthy News on Saturday.
Over the past weeks, Trump stated his desire to make Canada the “51st state” of the United States. “He is really planning this,” Trudeau told business leaders at a private meeting in Toronto, according to those present.
Trudeau suggested that the Republican president is “seeking access to Canada’s valuable mineral resources.”
Trudeau made the remarks during a closed-door trade meeting with around 100 businesspeople.
However, Canadian media, including CBC News, reported that a microphone was accidentally left on, making the statement public. By that time, journalists had already left the room.
Earlier this week, Trump reiterated from the White House that he would welcome Canada as part of the U.S.
Trudeau, who is stepping down soon, has said, however, there is “no chance whatsoever” that Canada will ever become part of the United States.
The Liberal Canadian leader also called Trump’s remarks a “tactic” to distract from the impact of his announced trade tariffs on imported Canadian goods.
The potential trade war between the two neighbors was narrowly avoided earlier this week after high import tariffs were temporarily suspended.
The same applied to tariffs on Mexico, bringing some relief to financial markets.
