Rubio: U.S. May Abandon Russia-Ukraine Peace Talks Within Days

by Emmitt Barry, Worthy News Correspondent

(Worthy News) – The United States may abandon efforts to broker peace between Russia and Ukraine within days if no clear progress is made, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned on April 18. Speaking after talks in Paris with European and Ukrainian leaders, Rubio said President Trump is prepared to “move on” from the negotiations in the absence of any clear signs of progress.

Rubio said the Trump administration has spent more than 80 days making repeated efforts to end the war between Russia and Ukraine. . He emphasized that the administration has now reached a critical juncture, stating it must soon decide whether continued diplomatic engagement is viable.

“President (Trump) has spent 87 days at the highest level of this government repeatedly, making efforts to bring this war to an end. We are now reaching a point when we need to decide and determine whether this is even possible or not. Which is why we’re engaging both sides,” Rubio said.

“We’re not going to continue with this endeavor for weeks and months on end,” he told reporters in Paris on Friday after meeting with European and Ukrainian leaders.

“We need to determine very quickly now—and I’m talking about a matter of days—whether or not this is doable in the next few weeks,” he added.

Speaking Friday, Rubio said he had come to Paris to “begin to talk about more specific outlines of what it might take to end the war” and to assess “whether or not this is a war that can be ended.”

“If it’s not possible, if we’re so far apart that this is not going to happen, then I think the president is probably at a point where he’s going to say we’re done,” he said.

“It’s not our war. We didn’t start it. The United States has been helping Ukraine for the past three years, and we want it to end, but it’s not our war,” he added.

Rubio’s remarks followed Ukraine’s announcement that it had reached an economic agreement with the United States. Ukraine’s Minister of Economic Development and Trade said both countries had signed a memorandum of intent.

As the U.S.-China trade war intensifies and China restricts access to its rare earth minerals, of which it controls about 90%, President Trump has been pursuing access to Ukraine’s rare earth elements and other natural resources as compensation for the billions of dollars in aid the U.S. has provided during the war.
