IDF Destroys Massive Hezbollah Tunnel in Southern Lebanon Amid Ceasefire Tensions

by Emmitt Barry, Worthy News Washington D.C. Bureau Chief

(Worthy News) – The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) destroyed what it described as the largest Hezbollah tunnel discovered in southern Lebanon on Tuesday evening, carrying out a controlled detonation shortly after issuing an unusual public warning to northern Israeli communities.

The tunnel, located near the Lebanese village of Qantara, was eliminated around 6 p.m., with officials cautioning that the blast would be heard across a wide region from Rosh Hanikra on the Mediterranean coast to the Golan Heights. Residents in nearby Israeli towns were given specific safety instructions ahead of the explosion, including staying indoors and distancing from large windows.

Local authorities confirmed the operation was part of a broader effort to dismantle Hezbollah’s underground infrastructure, which Israeli officials say has been expanded during the ongoing conflict.

Tensions remained high during the operation, despite a fragile ceasefire. Sirens were activated in Misgav Am shortly before the detonation, as interceptors were launched toward suspicious aerial targets. The IDF said the alerts were triggered out of concern that debris from interceptions could fall in populated areas.

Earlier in the day, additional interceptor launches were reported near Kiryat Shmona after another aerial threat was detected. According to the military, the object did not cross into Israeli territory, and no warning sirens were issued at that time.

The Iranian-backed Hezbollah also reportedly launched several explosive drones toward Israeli forces operating in southern Lebanon. The drones detonated near troops but caused no injuries, according to initial assessments.

Residents across northern Israel, including communities such as Metula, Margaliot, and Manara, were instructed to take precautions ahead of the blast. In some areas, authorities advised opening windows to reduce potential damage from the shockwave — an unusual directive highlighting the scale of the explosion.

Officials noted that a previous detonation of this magnitude had mistakenly triggered earthquake alerts. This time, systems were closely monitored to prevent unnecessary panic, though some localized alert systems in schools and institutions could still have been activated.
