Cyprus President Warns of Iranian Nuclear Threat, Reaffirms Alliance with Israel

NICOSIA, CYPRUS  (Worthy News) – Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides has sounded the alarm that an Iranian nuclear weapon would not only endanger Israel but also place his small Mediterranean nation directly in the line of fire.

“If Iran acquires nuclear capabilities, my country is also in danger. We are 30 minutes from Israel,” Christodoulides warned in a British podcast interview this week, underscoring the vulnerability of Cyprus due to its proximity to Israel and the wider Middle East conflict.

The Cypriot leader hailed Israel as “our closest ally in the region,” defending Jerusalem against what he called the international community’s “double standards.” He pointed to the hypocrisy of nations that criticize Israel while ignoring Turkey’s illegal occupation of Northern Cyprus since 1974.

Christodoulides also challenged the narrative that Israel is solely responsible for turmoil in the Middle East, blaming instead the aftermath of the Arab Spring and the failures of international powers to confront deeper regional instability.

His comments come against the backdrop of an escalating threat from Hezbollah. In June 2024, the now-deceased Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah openly threatened Cyprus, declaring that the island would be considered part of the war if it allowed Israel to use Cypriot bases. Christodoulides firmly rejected the claim, insisting Cyprus is not involved in military operations against Iran or its proxies.

Cyprus and Israel: An End-Times Connection?

The strengthening bond between Cyprus and Israel carries a prophetic dimension. In Ezekiel 27, the ancient seaport of Chittim (often identified with Cyprus) is described as a maritime hub of global trade in the last days. Daniel 11:30 also refers to the “ships of Chittim” as a decisive force that intervenes in Middle Eastern conflicts.

Prophecy scholars note that as Europe seeks alternative energy corridors after Russia’s war in Ukraine, Cyprus and Israel are positioned as central partners in supplying natural gas to the continent. This economic alliance, some argue, may foreshadow the “maritime powers” that will emerge in the prophetic landscape of the end times.

Cyprus’s strategic location, just off Israel’s coast, places it on the prophetic map. Its partnership with Israel on energy, security, and defense may point to a fulfillment of passages describing Mediterranean nations caught between global powers in the last days.

Looking Ahead

Christodoulides has called for deeper cooperation with Israel to secure regional stability, stressing that Cyprus supports Israel’s right to defend itself from Iran, Hezbollah, and Hamas. “Cooperation and political dialogue will enable us to face challenges together and to take advantage of what the region has to offer,” he said.

As Iran races toward nuclear capability and threats from Hezbollah intensify, Cyprus finds itself increasingly drawn into the center of the Middle East’s unfolding storm—just as the Bible foresaw long ago.
