KYIV/BUDAPEST (Worthy News) – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has dismissed Ukraine’s ambassador to the United States as Kyiv sought additional U.S. military assistance and numerous people were killed in the latest Russian and Ukrainian strikes.
Olha Stefanishyna, who had served as ambassador in Washington for just over a year after previously holding the posts of deputy prime minister and justice minister, said her departure was her own decision and was prompted by “personal circumstances.”
The dismissal followed Ukraine’s government reshuffle in July.
KEY DIPLOMATIC POST
Ukrainian media reported that the country’s National Anti-Corruption Bureau is investigating Stefanishyna over alleged corruption, although she has not been formally charged.
No successor has yet been announced.
The ambassador’s post in Washington is regarded as one of Ukraine’s most strategically important diplomatic assignments, as Kyiv remains heavily dependent on U.S. weapons supplies, intelligence sharing, and political support in its war against Russia.
Her departure was announced as Ukraine pressed Washington for additional Patriot air defense missile systems amid intensified Russian missile and drone attacks.
CIVILIAN CASUALTIES
The diplomatic reshuffle came as fighting continued to claim civilian lives on both sides of the conflict.
Russian-installed authorities said the death toll from Ukrainian drone attacks on occupied Crimea and Russia’s Krasnodar region had risen to at least 10 people, with about 40 others injured.
In the Black Sea resort of Arkhipo-Osipovka in Russia’s Krasnodar region, officials said seven people were killed, including children, after a drone struck a beach area. Russian authorities described the attack as a deliberate strike on civilians, an allegation Ukraine had not commented on by late Monday.
Officials said 21 beachgoers, including three children, were hospitalized, with nine reported in serious condition.
RUSSIAN ATTACKS
Ukraine also reported fresh civilian casualties from Russian strikes.
Authorities in the Dnipropetrovsk region said a Russian attack on a gas station killed three people, including a child, and wounded six others. The strike ignited a major fire and severely damaged the filling station and several vehicles.
Elsewhere, Russian attacks killed two people in Zaporizhzhia and another two in the southern Kherson region, according to Ukrainian officials.
Kyiv also accused Russia of targeting Ukraine’s cultural heritage after a Russian drone strike destroyed an estimated eight million books at the Ranok publishing house’s distribution center in Kharkiv.
CULTURAL LOSSES
Ranok Director Viktor Kruglov described the attack as “an attack on Ukrainian education and Ukrainian culture,” calling it the largest loss to Ukraine’s book infrastructure since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022.
Ukrainian publishers have repeatedly reported the destruction of books, libraries, museums, churches, film studios, and other cultural institutions during the war.
Ukraine says such attacks form part of a broader Russian effort to erase Ukrainian national identity, an accusation Moscow has consistently denied.
WILDBERRIES TARGETED
Ukraine also continued its campaign against Russia’s largest online retailer, Wildberries, striking another logistics center in Russia’s Vladimir region, about 180 kilometers (110 miles) east of Moscow.
The company said a fire broke out following the drone attack and confirmed that all employees had been evacuated, while one person was reported injured.
The latest strike followed a series of Ukrainian drone attacks on Wildberries warehouses across Russia and occupied Crimea in recent weeks.
The war, now well into its fifth year since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022, has increasingly expanded beyond the front lines, with both countries reporting deadly strikes far from the battlefield.
