(Worthy News) – President Donald Trump highlighted new government data Tuesday showing inflation remained steady in December, calling the figures “great (LOW!) inflation numbers for the USA.”
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Consumer Price Index rose 0.3 percent from November to December, while the annual inflation rate held unchanged at 2.7 percent. Core inflation, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, increased 0.2 percent for the month and stood at 2.6 percent year over year—slightly below economists’ expectations.
The report comes as the Trump administration continues to emphasize affordability, a key issue that helped propel Republicans to sweeping victories in the 2024 elections. Speaking at the White House ahead of a trip to Michigan, Trump said the data showed the economy was performing well and inflation remained “very low.”
Republicans credited the administration’s policies for easing price pressures. Republican National Committee Chair Joe Gruters pointed to lower gas prices and proposed tax relief measures, arguing the GOP is winning the affordability debate heading into the midterms.
Democrats pushed back, with Democratic National Committee officials insisting that many families are still struggling with high living costs. DNC Chair Ken Martin reiterated that affordability remains voters’ top concern as the next election cycle approaches.
Economists noted the figures offered some reassurance to consumers, though inflation remains above the Federal Reserve’s long-term target as policymakers weigh future interest rate decisions.
