WASHINGTON (Worthy News) – President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that the Republican Party will host the first-ever Midterm National Convention in 2026, an unprecedented move in U.S. political history.
Traditionally, national conventions are held every four years to nominate presidential candidates. Trump’s initiative marks a break from precedent, designed to energize supporters and showcase what he called the GOP’s “great successes” since his 2024 re-election.
“The Republicans are going to do a Midterm Convention in order to show the great things we have done since the Presidential Election of 2024. Time and place to be determined. Stay tuned, it will be quite the Event, and very exciting!” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post.
The 47th president first floated the idea last month, noting the GOP’s momentum heading into the midterm season. “The Republican Party is doing really well. Millions of people have joined us in our quest to MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN. We won every aspect of the Presidential Election and, based on the great success we are having, are poised to WIN BIG IN THE MIDTERMS,” Trump wrote on August 28.
He added: “In that light, I am thinking of recommending a National Convention to the Republican Party, just prior to the Midterms. It has never been done before. STAY TUNED!!!”
The 2026 midterm elections will decide control of Congress, with all 435 House seats and 34 Senate seats on the ballot. Senate control is particularly significant given the advanced age of several Supreme Court justices, raising the possibility that the chamber could determine the Court’s future for decades.
Trump also highlighted Republican fundraising successes and the administration’s efforts to roll back policies enacted under former President Joe Biden.
Meanwhile, reports suggest Democrats are weighing a similar move. Democratic National Committee Chairman Ken Martin has reportedly discussed the possibility of holding a Democratic midterm convention in 2026.
If both parties follow through, the 2026 midterms could mark a dramatic reshaping of the campaign calendar, with each side holding major conventions to rally their bases ahead of one of the most consequential elections in decades.
