Former FBI Director James Comey Indicted on Perjury and Obstruction Charges

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Worthy News) – Former FBI Director James Comey was indicted Thursday by a federal grand jury in Virginia on charges of making false statements to Congress and obstruction of justice over his role in leaking information during the Trump-Russia election interference investigation.

The indictment alleges Comey lied under oath when he denied authorizing leaks of FBI information to The New York Times and obstructed a congressional investigation by providing misleading testimony during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing.

Attorney General Pam Bondi announced the charges on social media, declaring:

“No one is above the law. Today’s indictment reflects this Department of Justice’s commitment to holding those who abuse positions of power accountable for misleading the American people. We will follow the facts in this case.”

FBI Director Kash Patel also weighed in, saying the Bureau was working to restore public trust eroded by past leadership.

“For far too long, corrupt leadership weaponized federal law enforcement,” Patel wrote on X. “Nowhere was this more blatant than during the Russiagate hoax, a disgraceful chapter in history we continue to investigate and expose.”

The indictment comes nearly five years after Comey’s September 30, 2020, testimony before Congress, where he reiterated earlier denials that he had ever authorized leaks regarding the Trump or Clinton investigations. Prosecutors argued those statements were false and designed to obstruct congressional oversight.

Comey, who was fired by President Donald Trump in 2017, has long been accused of leaking his “Comey Memos” to the press in hopes of prompting the appointment of a special counsel. Those leaks ultimately preceded Robert Mueller’s appointment.

The grand jury indictment includes two counts:

  • Count One: Making false statements to Congress.
  • Count Two: Obstruction of a congressional proceeding.

President Trump, reacting to the news, praised the indictment on Truth Social:

“JUSTICE IN AMERICA! One of the worst human beings this country has ever been exposed to is James Comey … He has been so bad for our Country, for so long, and is now at the beginning of being held responsible for his crimes against our Nation.”

Comey posted a video to Instagram Thursday night defending himself and calling the charges politically motivated:

“My family and I have known for years that there are costs to standing up to Donald Trump, but we couldn’t imagine ourselves living any other way … I’m not afraid, and I hope you’re not either. I’m innocent. So let’s have a trial. And keep the faith.”

The indictment was filed by interim U.S. Attorney Lindsey Halligan in the Eastern District of Virginia, just days before the statute of limitations was set to expire. Comey is expected to appear in federal court in Alexandria, Virginia, for arraignment in the coming days.
